Change, its been said, isn’t about the issues, its about moving people out of their comfort zones. So is our work. So is Public Health Zoom. The essays are about creativity, bureaucracy and behavior change. It’s good to remember; 1.) The system is stacked against you. 2.) And a dead change agent isn’t much good to anyone. So if you want to start a revolution, start by blending – your energy with the prevailing winds. We believe in working your way along the edge of the system, blending into a crowd, and turning it around. (If you’re very good you can make it jump - for a change. (A school of fish, or a flock of birds change direction all at once, just like that. There is no leader communicating change. The change exists first in the air. Then whap, everyone is on board.) I wrote a moderately scandalous book about public health and put it on the web. It developed something of a following. I was invited here and there to speak. I went to Brazil to work on a project to eliminate leprosy. I was invited by students to give the commencement address to the graduating class of the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, but was ultimately dis-inveted by the Regents when they found out I wasn’t a doctor. I like doctors but have always considered my dis-invitation a mark of honor. The system always rejects change. So change never happens deep in a system, it happens at its edge.
